Longer S phase in AP/BP self-proliferation

Referred from Huttner 2011 Nat communication

BPs have a substantially longer G1-phase than APs, and that the previously observed G1 lengthening of neurogenic NPCs in the VZ actually reflects the increasing contribution of BPs

(this provides a contrary viewpoint to the impression that AP cell cycle elongates as development progress)

Unexpectedly, expanding apical and basal progenitors exhibit a substantially longer S-phase than apical and basal progenitors committed to neuron production. Comparative genome-wide gene expression analysis of expanding versus committed progenitor cells revealed changes in key factors of cell-cycle regulation, DNA replication and repair and chromatin remodelling. Our findings suggest that expanding neural stem and progenitor cells invest more time during S-phase into quality control of replicated DNA than those committed to neuron production.

Tis21-GFP+ represent neurogenic division or BP production division

Tis21-GFP- is self-renewal division
